(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A man in the western suburbs is fighting plans for an industrial park because they would include the destruction of dozens of oak trees that are centuries old.
It's not the whole industrial park that Brian Maher objects to.
He doesn't have a problem with seven of the eight buildings planned for the Midwest Industrial Funds Geneva Park because they would be on farmland.
It’s the building that would mean the end of dozens of mature oak trees that he opposes.
"They're considered pre-settlement oaks because they were here before the city of Geneva. Actually, before any of the cities in this area,” Maher said.
"For context, a 39-inch oak is about 240 years old. Some of these trees are 45 to 48 inches in diameter. Putting them upwards of 300 years."
Maher is taking his case before Kane County and the city of Geneva, hoping for a relocation of a portion of the development.
WBBM Newsradio has asked a Midwest Industrial Funds executive for comment.
