CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois senior U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he is happy to see new details coming out about the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

There are stark new details in the unsealed brief from January 6 Special Council Jack Smith.

The brief reveals then President Trump's lack of concern when told his vice president,Mike Pence, was in danger. The statements suggest Trump didn't care if his false claims held up in court.

“I’m very concerned about what happened on January 6 because I was potentially one of the victims, sitting in the senate chamber and being told I had to leave quickly because the insurrection, this mob was coming down on me,” Durbin recalled.

He has no problem with the timing.

“President Trump not only started it, he refused to stop it, and it went on for hours,” Durbin said. “Innocent people were harmed, law enforcement, 140 members of law enforcement were injured, several lost their lives over incidents associated with it.”

The senator said he wants the story told honestly.

“This wasn’t a group of curious tourists. These were mobsters. They were determined to destroy that chamber and the people that were in it , and I’m glad we escaped,” Durbin said.
