ELGIN, IL(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -The Elgin City Council tonight will reconsider a decision to cancel the city’s popular Nightmare on Chicago Street Halloween event.

During a city council meeting earlier this month Elgin’s Special Events Coordinator, Kate O’Leary, recommended the zombie apocalypse event be scrapped for this year.

“At an estimated cost of $512,000, the risk of this event is too great to justify. With notoriously unpredictable weather in October, which is an enormous factor in event attendance, along with the unpredictability of a future COVID-19 spike that could potentially require us to cancel the event entirely, the likelihood of the city recouping the majority of the expense is low,” said O’Leary.

The council narrowly voted to cancel the event, which surprised many residents. And the response has prompted the council to reconsider.
