(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Flossmoor residents received an email from the village on Tuesday saying its National Night Out activities were canceled over what officials called safety issues.

The nationwide event is meant to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement, but the village says there have been several conversations that caused concern among law enforcement.

It's unclear if those conversations are linked to tensions surrounding last month's police shooting of 64-year-old Madeline Miller.

Police say she refused to drop a knife during a domestic abuse call and an officer fatally shot Miller.

Residents flooded the most recent Village Board meeting demanding an internal investigation into the shooting.

"The Village places a high priority on providing safe, family-friendly events that bring us together as a community," the village statement issued Tuesday said. "While we understand this announcement may disappoint many residents who are excited to attend, we did not want to place our guests, especially our younger guests, in a stressful environment."
