MORRIS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Three days after a dramatic fire, the evacuation order for Morris residents was lifted at 4 p.m. Friday.
After what authorities are calling one of the largest lithium battery fires in the nation, thousands of Morris residents are clear to return back to their homes.
At a Friday news conference, Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said his game plan is to let the fire continue to run its course.
"We are in for the long haul, until that scene is safe and secure and then the cleanup can start. And now we have this equipment set up with a constant, real-time air monitoring, so if things change, we are going to know right away," Chief Steffes said.
Chief Steffas said drones are being used to do thermal imaging to monitor the area.
Authorities will continue their presence as the fire smolders over the next week or so.
