(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The village of Glen Ellyn unveiled a new public art display Wednesday.

Walk through the heart of downtown Glen Ellyn and you’ll see two new murals on display. Artist Tony Fitzpatrick created the 8 foot by 10 foot paintings, which depict a woodpecker and a cardinal.

“I wanted birds that were endemic to Glen Ellyn and I've loved birds since I was a child,” he explained.

The murals are part of the DuPage Public Art Project, which was created by the College of DuPage.

Diana Martinez is director of the college’s McAnitch Arts Center.

“The idea of the DuPage Public Art project, my thought was we partner for two years with a community — they invest and we invest,” she said.

Martinez tells WBBM Newsradio the next public project will be at the pedestrian underpass near the Glen Ellyn Metra station

Looking ahead, she said the DuPage Public Art Project will partner with a different community every two years.
