CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — COVID-19 concerns are prompting many people to cut back on traveling once again but flights paying tribute to U.S. military veterans are forging ahead.
Honor Flight Chicago was the first of the 120 such hubs to resume when they flew 112 veterans to Washington, D.C. last month.
Codirector Doug Meffley said they made several changes, including requiring vaccinations for the veterans and the volunteers who help as well as limit the size of the crowds greeting them.
"A lot of things have changed. The love that we feel for the veterans and that we show the veterans has not. They're getting it in kind of a different way," Meffley said.
They have three more flights planned this year including an all-female veteran flight on Oct. 6.
"We've got over 120 applicants for that flight since it was announced back in February 2020. To get that off the ground and to have all these female veterans together is going to be a really, really cool event,” Meffley said.
