In and out of the DMV in 15 minutes? New Illinois program could make it so

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias unveiled what he called the “Skip the Line Program” for people seeking drivers' licenses, Real ID's and driving tests.

Giannoulias said he wants to eliminate the long waits some people face at Drivers Service Facilities around Illinois. So, 44 of the busiest ones — including all the locations in Chicago and the suburbs — will require appointments. It's the way of today's world, he said.

“Whether you need to get a haircut, an appointment with a doctor or a dentist, or get your car repaired, it’s easier for consumers when they have the opportunity to reserve a specific time that accommodates their schedule,” Giannoulias said.

The program will take effect on Sept. 1, and appointments can be scheduled online or by telephone at 844-817-4649.

Among other changes, some drivers' facilities will have expanded hours and 16 will be open on Saturdays.

Giannoulias said execution will be key to ensuring that wait times don’t swell even with the new appointment system. He said the department’s pilot program showed that 15 minutes per appointment should be enough time — and he added that they have built some cushions into the schedule.

Illinoisans seeking vehicle services such as title, registration and license plate sticker renewal will still be able to walk in.
