INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO)  Indiana State Senators have approved a bill Tuesday that would make state funding available for teachers seeking firearms training.

The sponsor in the Senate, Republican Travis Holdman, said he wished the training was mandatory.

“How is 40 hours of training going to prepare you to shoot a kid in your classroom?” asked Democrat Andrea Hunley. “This is not going to stop school shootings.”

When the legislation advanced in the House, Republican Jim Lucas  disagreed with that.

“The ultimate goal would be to have such a deterrent out there that nobody even considers this,” Lucas said.

The vote followed the NRA convention in Indianapolis, during which former President Trump advocated for training and arming teachers.
“If even 5% were voluntarily armed and trained to stop active shooters, we would achieve effective deterrence, and the problem would cease to exist,” Trump said.

Two Democrats crossed over and voted with all of the Republicans to approve the legislation.

Differences need to be worked out between the House and Senate versions.
