(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As the Naperville City Council prepares to vote on an ordinance that would ban the sale of certain high-powered rifles, one local gun shop owner said the ordinance won’t stop criminals from getting guns. Instead, he said, it’ll put him out of business.
Robert Bevis, the owner of Law Weapons and Supply, said this is political theater.
“They’re sort of using the Highland Park shooting as a push to get this done and pulling on the heart strings of people,” Bevis said. “What it’s really doing is, it’s just going to put me out of business. It’s not going to solve one crime. It’s not going to prevent one bad guy from coming into the city of Naperville and committing a crime.”
Bevis added that criminals aren’t the ones buying guns from stores like his.
“A gun shop is where lawful people go to buy firearms, where they have to have background checks, and they have waiting periods, and they do training,” Bevis said. “We’ve trained 17,000 people.”
He said banning the sale of the AR-15 alone, the most popular rifle, would put him out of business.
Bevis equated the ordinance to telling McDonalds they can no longer sell hamburger meat.
Of course, there are strong feelings on the other side of the issue, and many are expected to make their voices heard before the vote.
