CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A North Side alderman would like to hear from residents regarding the flooding that occurred on Sunday.
Ald. Andre Vasquez represents the 40th Ward, where streets and basements were flooded, and wants people to know that street flooding and overflow that gets into basements is normal when there's very heavy rain.
"If your street is flooding some of that is intended. There are intake restrictor valves that are placed that keep the water on the streets, so it's not backing up into basements. So, if the water is standing there for more than 48 hours, then you could escalate to our office. But, I would definitely recommend that neighbors also work to clear the storm drains first, to see if that helps," Vasquez said.
Anyone who did have water in the basement is encouraged to report it to 3-1-1, Vasquez said, to help the city understand patterns of flooding and to come up with improvement plans.
