Waiter wearing a face mask

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's a new push to get Chicago's restaurant workers vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Chicago Restaurant Coalition is calling on Mayor Lightfoot and city alderman to allow four workers at each of Chicago's more than 7,000 restaurants to receive the vaccine in the coming weeks.

"The data isn't there that says restaurants have been a problem," Coordinator Roger Romanelli said. "But, as we move to defeat the virus and restore safely, it's critical to look at restaurants as integral to our daily lives."

Dan Conroe with City Winery said keeping restaurant workers safe will be key in the coming months.

"As more people feel comfortable coming out, we expect that there is going to be some pushback from guests on these mask requirements as they feel like it's no longer necessary," he said. "It will be necessary and we will require it, but the staff will bear the brunt of that from some guests."

The group is also requesting more financial help for city restaurants, and eventually, another increase to indoor dining capacity.
