(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Elk Grove Village is enacting a new ordinance that makes it harder for groups of migrants to return.
The ordinance comes after what Mayor Craig Johnson says were negative experiences with migrants when the village housed about 100 of them last year and early this year.
Johnson says the ordinance, which was passed last week, cracks down on requirements for building owners. It prevents them from turning warehouses or vacant shopping centers into temporary housing.
"They have to meet certain requirements and conditions along the lines of what a housing hotel or motel would be, in order to possibly get a permit,” he said. “Knowing how our business are set up and all that for them to get a permit would be very difficult."
The ordinance also requires migrants to be thoroughly examined by an infectious disease doctor if hotels choose to accept them, he said.
Johnson said it’s his job look out for the public welfare: “I'm sworn to uphold that, and I take that to heart."
