Illinois State Representative and mayor of Calumet City Thaddeus Jones is reportedly under federal criminal investigation for tax issues involving his campaign funds.

The U.S. Attorney's Office issued a grand jury subpoena to the state board of elections, the Chicago Tribune reports. The subpoena is seeking records regarding three campaign funds controlled by Jones.

The paper reports a law enforcement source said they're investigating tax issues, involving the transfer of money between Jones and the funds.

The Democrat recently filed amended campaign finance reports. he had previously been accused by rivals of questionable spending involving campaign funds, including baseball outings, and nearly $7,000 spent over nearly three years at a Hooters restaurant.

The state board of elections found there was not enough evidence to show wrongdoing, and Jones was told to amend his filings. This comes as he's running for reelection as State Representative.

Jones declined to comment on the federal investigation.
