CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Thousands of Southsiders from communities neighboring Hyde Park lined the sidewalks today, celebrating the nation’s independence during the annual 4th on 53rd Parade.
Holding an American Flag, David is a Hyde Park local who told WBBM he enjoys the parade each year, adding something for those who would say that the United States isn’t worth celebrating.
"It's more important to do now than ever, because if we don't fight for equality, for equal rights, equal protection under the law, for rule of law, for everything the Supreme Court is trying to take away right now then we're not gonna have it."
Jessica, who was also attending the parade reflected on what July 4 means to her.
"That's kind of a loaded question, but I think fourth of July is a celebration of freedom and also a moment to remember where we're not free-folks who aren't free, times when we weren't," she said referring to how African-Americans viewed Independence Day.
Mayor Brandon Johnson started his first 4th of July as Chicago’s Mayor, by marching in the 4th on 53rd Parade.
