SKOKIE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A north suburban school board member who caused a stir by wearing a Palestinian scarf to a graduation ceremony in May has resigned her seat.

Jill Manrique had said in May she knew she’d be causing a controversy by wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh on her head at the Niles West High School graduation. She wanted to show support for Palestinian students who, she said, were marginalized at the school.

Now, according to the Skokie Review, Manrique has resigned her seat. She said it’s because she has moved out of the District 219 boundaries because of expensive housing costs. The 37-year old single mother of three now lives in Evanston.

District 219 is looking for interested candidates to fill her seat until next spring.
