HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Highland Park- based law firm is offering a unique way for survivors of domestic violence to get the legal help they need, safely.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the North Suburban legal aid clinic created a website that looked like a place for recipes and cooking tips.
The director of the clinic's Domestic violence law practice, Rebecca Weininger said it actually gave survivors access to free discrete legal advice.
"The success of that website then led us to try to find other ways to reach survivors where they are and that led to the founding of the cooking demonstration."
Monthly zoom classes serve as both real cooking demonstrations, but more importantly, as a place for attorneys to offer free advice through the chat function.
"There is no risk to the survivor. People are logging on for legal advice. What we really hope to achieve is a holistic approach to eradicating domestic violence, which is for people to understand that they are not alone," said Weininger.
