M*A*S*H may have ended its run on television 40 years ago, but it is still one of the most iconic TV series in history. The finale still holds the record for the most-watched American TV series finale of all time, with more than 100 million viewers, and some fans are still watching reruns of the show today. Luckily for those fans, M*A*S*H star Alan Alda hasn’t forgotten about the series either, and after 40 years he is finally ready to let go of some of his cherished memorabilia from the show.
It was recently announced that Alan Alda will auction off the boots and dog tags worn by his character, Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, in M*A*S*H. The iconic pieces will be sold through Dallas’ Heritage Auctions in late July, according to TV Line. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at New York’s Stony Brook University.
While the dog tags are a piece of television history, they are also a part of America history as they originally belonged to real soldiers, Hersie Davenport and Morriss D. Levine. “M*A*S*H was a great gift to us,” Alda said of the show recently. For any fan of the series, this is an auction they’ll definitely want to check out.
