Last fall, officials at DFW Airport began to notice an increase in cars being stolen from the airport parking lot. Eventually, they began to suspect a crime ring of thieves was involved in the thefts.
At the time, airport officials told NBC DFW, “Investigators do believe there is an element of crime rings behind many of the thefts.”
Well, it was just announced that police have arrested the leader of this crime ring that have stolen an estimated $5 million worth of cars from DFW Airport!
An investigator said, “Approximately 14 suspects have been identified…the suspects in this group have stolen approximately 52 cars from DFW, for a total loss of $4.9 million.”
According to an arrest document, the group had been stealing cars from the airport from early 2023 to as recently as last month.
Police say the thieves were stealing cars from not only DFW, but from airports in New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada and driving them south into Mexico. The leader, Yoel Hernandez-Frometa, used Autel devices to reprogram key fobs so he could steal the vehicles.
In a new statement, leaders of DFW airport said, “Investigators with the DFW Airport Department of Public Safety remain in close contact with peer local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to identify and disrupt organized crime rings targeting airport parking facilities throughout the country.
“Due to the work of DFW Airport police, the airport has seen a more than 40-percent reduction in car thefts from the terminal areas so far this year compared with 2023.”
