A group of students from the metroplex recently came up with an incredible way to give back to their community. Combining their volunteering experience and their technological abilities, the group was able to create an app to help the issue of food waste. Their app helps organizations coordinate food donations, so food no longer goes to waste and instead goes to where it is needed most.
Four students from Dallas ISD's School for the Talented and Gifted recently launched FoodNex, an app that helps coordinate food donations. After seeing firsthand how organizations struggled at times with food distribution, the group decided to come up with a platform to keep things organized. “When we volunteered at these areas, there would be weekly food distribution events to families and by the end of the event, we would often, like, run out of food. That, like, really hurt my heart because they wouldn't receive the food that they needed,” said TAG senior Dat Tran.

According to NBC DFW, the app works like a dating app for those who have food to donate, and organizations in need of food to distribute. Thanks to these students, some may now get the food they need to survive.
