Gotta catch ‘em all. That remains the tagline for the Pokémon universe, and those words ring truer than ever thanks to the explosion of the recent trading card market.
No longer just a game for children, even videos of collectors opening cards receive millions of views on YouTube, and the search for the most valuable cards is akin to a journey to find the Ark of the Covenant.
Recently, hundreds of Pokémon fans waited in lines outside of Sam’s Clubs all across the country for hours to be among the first to grab an exclusive collection of cards: the Ascended Heroes Focused Fighters Premium Collection.
In a clip from CBS News, one collector said he forwent showering to be able to wait in line for 12 hours to get his hands on the cards.
But why wait for so long for Pokémon cards?
One collector said it reminds him of a simple time in his life.
Aaron Ramos from Corpus Christi, who also waited in line for hours to grab the exclusive set, told KIII-TV, “The nostalgia factor. Back in '99 I was collecting cards with my mom going to different stores.
"It's kind of getting hot again and I'm reliving it. It feels good.”
