A NASA research plane suffered a malfunction the air and had to make an emergency landing at a Texas airport.

According to KHOU 11, the research aircraft had to execute a “belly landing” at Ellington Airport in Houston, without the aid of gear due to a mechanical issue.

An aviation expert said the flames and smoke were caused by friction during the landing, and that the worst-case scenario would have been a post-landing fire.

The two crew members aboard the WB-57 aircraft were able to safely exit the aircraft uninjured.

NASA says it will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
