Back in October, the city of Garland launched the second largest skate park in Texas, a 46,000 square foot skater’s paradise known as ‘The Boneyard.’ However, one of skateboarding’s biggest names is now calling on the city to update the name to honor a local legend. Tony Hawk recently shared a video asking the park to be renamed after Garland’s own Jon Comer, who was the first pro skateboarder to compete with a prosthetic leg.

On January 13, Tony Hawk shared a video directed at Garland city officials asking them to honor Jon Comer with their new skate park. “It would solidify his legacy and it would be an inspiration for other skaters in years to come,” said Hawk. Comer, who is known as the godfather of adaptive skateboarding, died in 2019 after a long career full of skate videos and photos in magazines, medals and even an award-winning 2004 documentary about his life.

According to Dallas Morning News, Garland District 5 councilwoman Margaret Lucht recently introduced a motion to gather additional information on Comer’s connection to the city. It could end up making the council’s agenda for one of its scheduled meetings in February. If the change occurs, many young DFW skaters will be inspired by the local legend’s story.
