Prince George, 7, and mom, Kate Middle, and dad, Prince William, did their best to push England to victory as they entered Sunday’s Euro championship final, a game that marked, as Today noted, the first time England’s men’s team has played in a soccer final since 1966.

On Saturday, the Royal Family expressed their support and deep understanding of the historic nature of this event, posting an amazing old photo of Queen Elizabeth the last time she attended such a final game — 55 years ago.

The next morning, Prince William went a little more modern with his well-wishing, posting a congratulations and good luck video clip to his personal Instagram account.

“Can’t really believe this is happening,” said the beaming Prince. So exciting. Just wish you the very best of luck. You bring out the very best of England, and we’re all behind you. The whole country is behind you. So, bring it home.”

And on top of the rarity of England’s involvement, the usual fevered excitement over this tournament was doubled by the fact that it had been cancelled last year due to COVID.

More than 60,000 showed up to Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday. And there in the crowd were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the adorable Prince George.

Of course the Royals aren’t showing up in the usual team jerseys or scarves.

As Today noticed, Prince George and his father were charmingly cute in their nearly identical ensembles — navy suits with red, white, and blue ties. The little Prince wore a light blue button-up while William wore a crisp white shirt. And Catherine wore a crisp white blazer styled with a pair of statement red earrings to match the colors of England's flag.

While the outcome was disappointing for the locals, it was an exciting match, ending in a penalty shootout, with Italy winning the shootout 3-2.

And despite the defeat, the game and the amazing tournament leading up to it was no doubt a good diversion for Prince William after a year of some tumult in the Royal Family.

William instantly took to Twitter to raise his support for the valiant effort.

“Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory,” the post read. “@England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W.”
