(SportsRadio 610) - Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik is getting attention from other teams around the NFL seeking a new head coach.

Both the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders have requested permission to interview Slowik, who is in his first season as Texans offensive coordinator and play caller.

The Panthers fired Frank Reich after a 1-11 start to his first season as their head coach. Carolina's only win with Reich came against the Texans.

The Commanders fired Ron Rivera, a former Panthers coach, after four seasons leading Washington. Both teams need fixes at quarterback, whether it be someone helping Carolina's No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young reach his potential, or figuring out which direction to go at the position in Washington D.C.

With Slowik calling plays and rookie C.J. Stroud at quarterback, the Texans have the fifth-ranked passing offense in the NFL and the second-best in the AFC. It does not necessarily mean Slowik is ready for a head coaching job, but it certainly explains why other teams are taking notice.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans were both asked Tuesday about Slowik getting attention from other teams. Caserio said it's a goal to keep as many good coaches in the building for as long as possible. Ryans said his advice to Slowik is to be selective about where he goes to become a head coach.

"You only get one opportunity to do it, and you want to make sure you’re selective and that you’re going to – if you get the opportunity – going to a place that you feel like you can be effective," Ryans said.
