After Clemson's offense struggled in week 1 scoring just 3 points against Georgia, the Tiger offense exploded Saturday night. The Tigers hosted Appalachian State for their home opener and there was no suspense in this one. Clemson decimated App. State 66-20 at Death Valley.
The Tiger offense got off to a fast start which I think was important for them after struggling in Week 1. Clemson scored 35 1st quarter points to take control of the game, right out of the gate. They then would score 3 times in the 2nd quarter. The Tigers were up 42-0 in the 2nd quarter before App. State got on the board. Clemson scored 56 1st half points and led 56-13 at the break.
It was all academic after the 1st quarter and Clemson would cruise to a 46 point win, which could have been more lopsided. However, Clemson rested the starters in the 2nd half and got snaps for seemingly every guy on the active roster.
Clemson rolled up over 700 yards of total offense. The Tigers had 460 passing yards and 252 rushing yards. Clemson was also plus 2 in the turnover margin. Tiger QB Cade Klubnik had his best game in a Tiger uniform thus far. Klubnik was 24 of 26 passing for 378 yards and 7 total TD's (5 passing and 2 rushing).
Back up QB Chris Vizzina saw action in the 2nd half on for Klubnik in "mop up duty".
Clemson RB Phil Mafah ran for 118 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Freshman WR Bryant Wesco Jr. , who Clemson fans were clamoring to see get more playing time showed flashes of brilliance and amazing potential. Wesco had 130 yards on just 3 catches and a TD, that's an average of over 40 yards per catch.
Tight End Jake Briningstool had 7 catches for 100 yards and 2 TD's. Freshman LB Sammy Brown out of Jefferson High School in North Georgia led the defense with 9 tackles, 7 of them were unassisted.
Clemson has a bye week this Saturday and will be back in action hosting NC State Sept. 21st at Death Valley.
