In a game heard on The Fan Upstate, Furman bounced back with a 21-10 road win at the Citadel, Saturday afternoon. The win keeps Furman in contention in the SoCon race, as they are now 2-1 in league play and one game back of Mercer and Samford who are both 3-0 and tied for 1st place.
The Paladin defense came to play, especially early as they held the Citadel to just three 1st half points. Furman QB Tyler Huff was back in the starting lineup after missing time with injury.
Furman struck 1st scoring in the 1st quarter, scoring on a Devin Abrams 2 yard TD run to lead 7-0. Citadel would get on the board with a 22 yard FG from Colby Kitner late in the 1st half. Furman would take a 7-3 lead into the halftime locker room.
In the 2nd half, Furman would stretch the lead scoring on two TD drives early in the 3rd. Both scores came on Dominic Roberto TD runs, the first was a 26 yard scamper with 11 minutes left in the 3rd frame. The second came about a minute and half later in the game, as Roberto scored from 5 yards out to give Furman its largest lead of the day at 21-3.
Citadel would get their lone TD of the game late in the 3rd. That score came on a 26 yard TD strike when QB Ricky Conway found Ahmad Green. Furman then carried a 21-10 lead into the 4th.
The Furman defense would close the door from there, shutting out Citadel in the final frame. The Paladin D held the run heavy Citadel offense to just 107 rushing yards in the game. That 107 yards came on 41 rushing attempts, an average of less than 3 yards per carry. Furman ran for 170 yards and avergae of nearly 5 yards per tote.
Both teams were even in the turnover margin, as both defenses had two takeaways. RB Dominic Roberto was the catalyst for the Furman offense, he had 133 yards and 2 rushing TD's on just 18 carries.
The Paladins are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play. They are back in action this week hosting Western Carolina in another critical SoCon match up. That game is set for a 2 PM kickoff Saturday at Paladin Stadium. You can hear every Furman game, all season long on The Fan Upstate.
