AutoNSider Review | 2020 McLaren GT

When is “less” “more”?
McLaren’s new Gran Touring easily answers that question.
This is hands-down the “deal” in the McLaren family…and the most useable McLaren, too.
Still droolingly gorgeous and still able to top 200 MPH and get you to 60 in 3.1 seconds, stats like that can hardly be called “less”.
But here’s one that is less. Roughly 90 thousand dollars.
Let’s be real. Most one-percenters enjoy a bargain just as much as the rest of us. After all, they probably didn’t get to be a one-percenter by being careless with finances, did they? So even in the rarified air of six-figure vehicles, the difference between low to mid $200’s and low to mid $300’s can make a difference.
And let’s be even more honest. The real performance difference between McLaren’s new GT and their “race car without a number” 720S is YOU. Yes…a good driver in a 612 HP GT will still blow the doors off of a novice behind the wheel of a 710 HP 720S.
So how ‘bout the “more”?
That’s where the new GT shines…especially for the passenger.
At roughly two inches longer, McLaren’s GT has an actual rear hatch, A thin bag or two of clubs might fit, but m’ lady’s dresses and maybe four or five small bags are a natural. Plus you’ve still got the “frunk” that can take a couple of bags or a couple of cases of Champagne. Better yet, one of each.
And back to that hatch for a moment. It’s an engineering miracle that McLaren came up with an attractive quilted thermal cover to go over that red-hot angry animal of an engine and keep your contents somewhat cool. While I wouldn’t put fresh seafood back there for a six-hour drive, your hatch should be good to store almost everything else.
The new McLaren GT comes in three trims starting at around $210,000.
Their range-topping Luxe brings comfort up a few notches with Softgrain Aniline leather seating, headliner, doorsill trim…and even the floor of your frunk.
You’ll also have power heated seating, a powered and adjustable steering column, ambient lighting and…for those rare occasions when you’d rather listen to the radio than your 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8…upgraded audio.
The only things that aren’t there that I’d really like to see is a heads-up display and a knob on the radio….as with a vehicle as serious as this, I really don’t want to ever have to take my eyes off the road.
So if you’ve outgrown the need to have the absolute fastest and most extreme…if you’re comfortable with who you are and you’re at that place in life where you appreciate the really fine things in life…and can afford a few of them…you might just find the GT to be the best McLaren ever made. And your passenger will likely agree.
