With school back in session across metro Atlanta, it's time to brush up on school bus and school zone safety. Those big yellow buses are rolling, and it's up to all of us to keep students safe as they head back to class.
School Bus Rules of the Road
One of the biggest mistakes drivers make is ignoring school bus stop signs. Here's a reminder of what's legal, and what's not:
STOP for the stop sign: If a school bus has its stop sign extended, traffic in both directions must stop, unless you're on a divided highway. On divided roads, only the traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.
Flashing yellow lights mean slow down! That's your signal the bus is about to stop. Kids might be rushing to catch it, so be alert and give plenty of space.
Never pass a stopped school bus. Not only is it dangerous, it can cost you big. Just ask my cousin, who got a hefty ticket trying to zoom past one in high school.
School Zone Safety Tips
Slow it down: Most school zones drop the speed limit to 25 mph or less.
Beware of cameras: Speeding in a school zone could get you caught on camera and mailed a surprise ticket.
Obey crossing guards and all posted signage. These rules are in place to protect students, staff, and you.
Watch for walkers and bikers, especially little ones who may not always look both ways.
Check before you reverse: If you're parked near a school, double-check for kids before backing out.
Plan Ahead
Expect longer commutes, carpool lines, and frequent stops during school hours. Give yourself extra travel time and stay in the loop about school events, traffic changes, or detours that may affect your route.
Let's work together to make this school year safe for everyone on the road!
