NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Newest Mets infielder Francisco Lindor spoke to the media for the first time on Monday as he participated in a Zoom conference as he gets set to come to New York and don the blue and orange.
What will he do first?
"I love pizza, so I'll probably eat some pizza," said Lindor, who comes to Flushing in a trade that also brought starter Carlos Carrasco to the Amazins.
The Indians were just in a World Series back in 2016, losing to the Cubs in that memorable matchup that brought the championship back North Side of Chicago for the first time since 1908, so he’s got some lofty goals for this season.
"Obviously we want to be the No. 1 team in New York, but we also want to be the No. 1 team in the entire country.” Lindor said.
After a great start to his career in Cleveland it will be a different feel to be in New York, but so far he’s looking forward to it and being a part of something special.
"I'm excited to be part of the great thing they have going on in the clubhouse. I just want to be a little piece of the puzzle," he said.
Lindor is in the final year of his contract and had wanted to remain in Cleveland but the two sides couldn’t come to an extension.
It’s something he was asked a few times during the call, but he mainly stayed focused on this season and the task at hand, winning a World Series.
"I have never negotiated a contract during the season. Never," said Lindor. “I have always said before spring training, but once we get to spring training it's time to enjoy the ride and focus on winning. That should be the only thing I'm focusing on."
Mets fans should really love that as the 2021 season looks to be even more exciting that it looked just a few weeks ago.
