Boomer & Gio: Is Daniel Jones 'dead man walking' with Giants?
Boomer and Gio reacted to Sauce Gardner’s viral response, or lack thereof, when asked what he thought about Daniel Jones after Wednesday’s joint practice between the Jets and Giants.
While Boomer and Gio agreed that it could have been something as similar as the Jets star cornerback being distracted by a teammate off camera, they also agreed that it is another reason to cast doubt on what Jones can be in what will be a pivotal season.
For Gio, he believes Jones is widely seen as a quarterback who is at the end of his rope in New York.
“Going into this season, Daniel Jones, to most people, looks like a dead man walking,” Gio said. “This is it for him. This is his last year. They had no better options, and we’re gonna see the last of him. That is what it feels like.”
Boomer agrees that Jones feels like a player nearing his expiration date with the team, given the fact that the Giants have an escape hatch in his contract after this season, and were already flirting with trading up to take a quarterback in this year’s draft. But, there is a way where Jones can change that narrative, though it will take an even better season than the career year he had two seasons ago.
“That is not incorrect,” Boomer said of Gio’s assessment of Jones. “Unfortunately for him, with the injury bugs and some of the plays he made against the Texans, there are a lot of things that are out there that he has to correct, and a lot of things he has to make happen to stay here and finish out his contract.
“This is his career moment...he’s gotta have a year where he’s got 35 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, maybe runs for 500 yards and throws for 4,000, and becomes the guy he was under Brian Daboll in Daboll’s first year, and takes that next step.”
