Boomer: Pete Alonso is 'losing money by the day' as free agency approaches
The Mets were swept out of Seattle by the Mariners over the weekend, with the offense managing just one run in the entire three-game series.
One of the many bats that went silent was Pete Alonso, as the slugger went hitless in 11 at-bats with six strikeouts, failing to build on his big day in Thursday's series finale against the Rockies when he went 3-for-5 with two home runs.
Boomer says Alonso's continued mixed bag of a season continues to lighten the bag he will receive this winter when he becomes a free agent.
"They can still be a part of the playoffs, which is a good thing…but the real issue for me is that while the bullpen isn't that good, Pete Alonso is losing money by the day," Boomer said. "He has to carry this team.
"I don't know what's going on with Pete."
Boomer says the Mets need Alonso to help carry the team through the final six weeks of the regular season and into a playoff spot, but right now, he is more part of the problem than he is a solution, and that needs to change. Otherwise, the contract offers will only get lighter.
"The way they're playing, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs," Boomer said. "All of a sudden, they have morphed back into this malaise, which is really disappointing.
"Right now, I'd be hard pressed to say I wouldn't give him more than a year or two."
