As the Mets fall out of relevancy and further out of the Wild Card picture, Sal Licata says the only way to revitalize hope in the future of the franchise would be to make the biggest free agent splash in the upcoming offseason.
Which would result in the Mets plucking away one of the game’s biggest stars from their crosstown rivals.
“Anything less than Juan Soto for Steve Cohen and these Mets is an utter disaster,” Sal said. “I can’t take it anymore!
“At least it would make me feel like they’re a real organization. The only thing they’ve been able to hang their hats on is Steve Cohen’s money…well, his money is worthless if he can’t get the top guys.”
Cohen wasn’t able to land Yoshinobu Yamamoto this past winter, as the pitcher seemed set on joining Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers despite a competitive offer from Cohen. But this winter will see Soto, well in his prime, likely on the free agent market, and Sal says Cohen has to win back the excitement of the fanbase by flexing his financial might and bringing Soto to Queens.
“Soto is the only thing that might give me some satisfaction,” Sal said. “If Steve Cohen is able to land Juan Soto, it does change the perception entirely.”
