Brian Cashman didn't address every deadline desire, but he doesn't see many Yankees weaknesses

Brian Cashman joined BT and Sal on Wednesday to discuss the trade deadline and all things Yankees, and expressed his belief that the roster he constructed is enough to end the team’s frustrating title drought.

Even if that means some desires for roster improvement weren’t able to be satisfied before Tuesday’s deadline.

“I didn’t hit everything I wanted to do, no,” Cashman said. “If you could write your own script, I certainly would have hit on everything I wanted to hit on…I definitely didn’t hit everything. I hit on what I hit on. I’m happy with what I brought in and I’m happy with the team we have.

“In the end, you’re always wishing you could have done more, because it’s about trying to do everything you can to improve your chances within reason.”

Of course, even if Cashman did get to hit on every need he saw within the team, it doesn’t guarantee a championship. But he believes enough was done to put these Yankees in a position to finish the season on top.

“There isn’t always a perfect piece out there, and even when you have some perfect pieces - I remember when the Tigers were running our [David] Price, [Max] Scherzer, and [Justin] Verlander, and they got knocked out…so it goes both ways,” Cashman said. “We’ve had championship contending rosters, and certainly we had higher expectations in years gone by…all I can tell you is we try to hit it every which way we can.”

While he admittedly didn’t get to address every desire, Cashman doesn’t see much weakness within the 2024 Yankees, as they have now followed up a brutal two-month stretch with five inspiring wins in a row.

“I wouldn’t say we have a weakness. I’d say we have a lot of strengths,” Cashman said. “It’s just, is the collection good enough? I think we have a really strong pitching unit and a really strong offensive unit…is there a better collection of players as a team? We’re about to find out. I know we have a good team that is capable of being that last team standing, and we’re gonna go find out.”
