BT: Yankees not getting creative to keep Juan Soto would be most 'colossal failure' he's seen from team

BT believes that the Yankees would still be capable of building a winning roster if Juan Soto doesn’t return this winter, as Brian Cashman could use the money that would have went to Soto on other roster needs.

But he agrees with Sal that the Yanks have to do whatever it takes to keep him, even if it means avoiding luxury tax penalties by going heavy on deferrals like the Dodgers did with Shohei Ohtani.

“With the arrival of deferred payments and creativity, the ability of the Yankees’ financial gurus to sit down and construct something that says ‘There’s no way I can leave this,’” BT said. “If they can’t do that, it’s the most colossal fail I’ve ever seen from the Yankees.

“There’s a million ways to skin this cat. You make sure that he stays.”

It will cost a pretty penny to keep Soto, especially as he enjoys a career year in his first season in pinstripes, and BT believes that Hal Steinbrenner and company will come with a respectable offer, and it will be up to Soto to take it or leave it.

“There will be nothing nebulous about this. There will be a scoreboard,” BT said. “The Yankees will either come correct or they won’t, and I fully believe they will. I have no doubts that they will.”
