Gio: Would it be 'good business' for Yankees to sign Juan Soto when roster has so many holes?
As the Yankees continue to slog their way through an extended malaise, Gio is starting to wonder if signing Juan Soto to a long-term deal makes sense for a team that is littered with holes.
“If they end up making an early exit in the playoffs or missing the playoffs, do you think they’re gonna bring Juan Soto back for $500 million?” Gio said. “If you don’t go to the ALCS or better with Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, and you’re adding another guy making over $40 million a year to this roster, is that the right way to do business?”
Stugotz replied that it is absolutely the right way for a team with the Yankees wealth to do business, but Hal Steinbrenner has publicly stated that the team’s current payroll is not sustainable, so if Soto is signed to a record contract, how much more funding will Brian Cashman have to add to the rest of the roster, which currently seems barren outside of Soto and Aaron Judge?
“Has it worked out for the Dodgers? Has it worked out for the Mets? Has it worked out for the Yankees?” Gio said. “I understand he’s young…but if you’ve got this type of team and so many holes. You have Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton’s contract, Aaron Judge’s contract, and then Juan Soto’s contract…all that payroll, and the rest of the team is Jahmai Jones and JD Davis and Jose Trevino…what does that do for you?”
