Keith: Yankees look 'cooked,' hard to believe holes can be filled at trade deadline

The Yankees continue to scuffle and slide in the standings, and have the worst record in baseball over their last 22 games, hardly a small sample size at this point.

Following Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Rays, Keith opened his show lamenting at how far the Bombers have fallen, as a loss on Wednesday or Thursday would mean eight straight series without winning a single one.

“This team is cooked right now. They are defeated right now,” Keith said. “It doesn’t matter if Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner are there. They are in a bad one right now. It seems like the only guy locked in every at-bat and trying to be a hero is Ben Rice.

“They’re cooked. I’m ready for football to start…as much as I love the Yankees, I love football. I don’t love watching the Yankees struggle like that.”

Watching the Yankees has suddenly become a chore after the first two months of the season was some of the most enjoyable stretches of baseball in the Bronx in years. The skid has exposed flaws in the roster, and Keith doesn’t believe Cashman will be able to plug all the holes necessary to make this team a legitimate World Series threat.

“The off day [Monday] night was a relief. How did we get here so fast?” Keith said.

“This isn’t the gauntlet anymore. The gauntlet revealed that this team is flawed. This is not a well-constructed roster. They have so many holes to fix at the deadline…you have to be crazy to think they’ll be able to plug all those holes and fix this team to become a contender again.”
