Keith: Anthony Volpe is on fire, but Yankees shouldn't move him to leadoff spot

Anthony Volpe continued his torrid start to the season on Monday night, clubbing a three-run home run in the Yankees’ easy 7-0 win over the Marlins in the Bronx.

The home run raised Volpe’s season OPS to a robust 1.154, and he is among the top players in the American League so far in terms of WAR.

Keith loves what he has seen from Volpe so far, but isn’t in a rush to move him up in the lineup.

“This is the Volpe era. We’re in the AV club,” Keith said. “This kid looks like an All-Star right now. “Don’t be in a rush to make him the leadoff hitter. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Leave him where he is.

“I’m loving his at-bats. He seems to have a better sense of the strike zone than the umps.”

Volpe’s flattened-out swing has seemed to make all the difference to begin his second season in the majors, while his enhanced plate discipline makes him an impact bat in the bottom half of the order that lengthens the Yankee lineup.

“The kid grew up in one offseason, because he’s like that,” Keith said. “He’s a Jersey kid.”
