PORT HURON, Mich. (WWJ) -- A North Carolina man is facing multiple charges in St. Clair County after he was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car with his son in the back seat next to a loaded gun.
Port Huron police say officers found the man, whose identity has not been released, in a blue Honda Civic parked at the Marathon Gas Station on Military Street around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Authorities say while the man was slumped over the steering wheel, the child was playing with Pokemon cards in the back seat, with a loaded handgun sitting next to him.
When one officer tried to wake the man up, he noticed another loaded handgun, a .223 rifle with loaded magazines, a loaded shotgun, open liquor, prescription drugs and what appeared to be illicit drugs in the vehicle.
The police investigation revealed the man, a 40-year-old from Raeford, North Carolina, had driven all the way to Michigan to meet a women that he'd met on a social media site.
The man was driving on a suspended license and didn't have a permit to carry a firearm.
He was arrested and lodged in the St. Clair County Intervention Center. He is facing possible charges of carrying a concealed weapon, child endangerment/operating under the influence of drugs, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and driving on a suspended license, according to Port Huron Police.
The man's son was turned over to the Department of Human Services, who are in the process of making arrangements to get the child back to relatives in North Carolina.
"This is another example of proactive policing by members of the Port Huron Police Department which resulted in the protection of a child, the arrest of a dangerous person, and numerous guns taken off the City of Port Huron streets," Port Huron Police Chief Joe Platzer said in a press release.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
Police are asking anyone who has any information regarding this crime to call 810-987-6688.
