CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In an effort to reduce the number of children and teens in Chicago who are vaping, an alderman has proposed major rule changes for stores that sell those products.

Anthony Napolitano of the 41st ward calls the use of vaping products astronomical among children and teens. He also said there's been a sharp rise in the number of shops and businesses selling vaping products across Chicago.

Napolitano said some of those shops are targeting children and teens by offering flavored vaping products or using other methods, such as a store in his ward that sold vaping products alongside gym shoes.

“You're glamorizing this vaping tobacco when you putting it next to gym shoes and kind of making it like, hey, this is cool, gym shoes are cool, the Vape and tobacco is cool, so you know, we're getting rid of that.”

Napolitano has convinced a City Council committee to approve his proposal to require any business that gets more than 20% of its revenue from sales of vaping products to get a license from the city.

His proposal also calls for vape stores to be no closer than 1,000 feet from any others. He expects the full City council will consider the new rules at next week's meeting.
