Penguins not getting any 'bigger' as free agency begins

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Just a couple of hours into free agency some interesting thoughts on the Pens in free agency.

·       First, the known hits you in the face.  The Pens have little money, which is why they were just about to retain Evan Rodriguez and couldn't even afford the 2-year, $2.4 million for Frederick Gaudreau.

·       Some thought he could never be replaced, however it seems like the Pens found a new Brandon Tanev in grittiness with a better scoring touch and someone who rises to the big moments in Brock McGinn from Carolina

·       The new management team saying over-and-over they need size, they need to get bigger.  They sign three players, one listed as 6' and two others listed at 5'11", but that may be kind.

·       A pair of players clearly revived their careers with the Penguins last year.  Defenseman Cody Ceci with a solid year now gets 4 years, $13 million and the forward Gaudreau signing with the Wild.

·       Should fans worry about any Pittsburgh athlete signing with Tampa Bay?  Lightning get Pens third-string goalie Maxime Legace.

·       I still watched to see where the former Pens sign, especially the obscure ones like Greg McKegg with the Rangers.  Others to sign early ,Ian Cole to Carolina, Nick Bonino signs with San Jose, Alex Goligoski joins the Wild, Brandon Sutter to Vancouver
