The Fort Worth Zoo recently received a gift that arrived just in time for Valentine's Day. They announced 17 lesser flamingo chicks have been born at the zoo over the last month, with more on the way. The chicks are currently receiving around-the-clock feedings and care.
There are some new animals at the Fort Worth Zoo that guests will soon be able to get a look at. However, the 17 lesser flamingo chicks may not look like pink birds yet, as they are born white or gray. According to WFAA, the pink color will come by age 3 or 4 due to the pigments or carotenoids found in their diet.
"The Zoo's lesser flamingo breeding efforts are incredibly important to create a long-term, self-sustaining population of these birds in U.S. zoos – lesser flamingos are listed as near threatened by IUCN, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, primarily due to habitat alteration," said the zoo. Soon, these birds will be moved to the exhibit where they will be able to live the good life of the Fort Worth Zoo.
