Selling an entire song catalog for large sums is officially the cool thing to do for iconic rock stars. It seems every week another classic band or artist sells their life’s work for millions. Now, ZZ Top has joined that group, selling their “entire music interests” for $50 million.
It was announced recently that ZZ Top had reached a deal with BMG and KKR that included a buyout of the Texas trio's publishing catalog and income from recorded and performance royalties. The band has worked with the company previously, as BMG served as co-publisher and administrator of the band's publishing catalog. “This deal is a testament to the success, staying power and continuing musical relevance of ZZ Top, but also to the power of our partnership with KKR. This agreement furthers our vision of providing artists and songwriters not just a financial exit, but also a vehicle committed to respecting and treasuring their artistry,” said BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch.

It is unknown what the company plans to do with the rights to ZZ Top’s music catalog at this time. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide throughout their career, so they will have plenty to work with. Hopefully this doesn’t end with ZZ Top selling hygiene products.
