How much famous TV stars get paid in royalties

Big-name actors earn obscene paychecks during production of prestige shows and long-running sitcoms, but stars can earn even more money if they negotiate a deal for backend royalties on a show’s distribution. Year after year of reruns, especially for enduring shows like “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “The Sopranos,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “ER,” and “I Love Lucy,” can add up to millions every year in checks to famed stars. Here’s how much TV stars get in royalties every year.

Jennifer Aniston

The show: “Friends”
How much she makes: $10-20 million per year
Going into “Friends,” Aniston wasn’t more famous than co-stars Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow. That sense of equality helped the whole crew band together to negotiate as a group, slowly pushing up their base salaries year over year, CelebrityNetWorth reports. In 2000, the cast managed to secure backend royalties. The royalties vary year to year, but the show consistently generates over $1 billion in syndication and streaming annually.

Jerry Seinfeld

The show: “Seinfeld”
How much he makes: $40-50 million per year
The pay gap between Jerry Seinfeld and his “Seinfeld” co-stars has become a thing of show biz infamy. According to CelebrityNetWorth, from the get-go Seinfeld owned a share of the show’s backend equity, along with co-creator Larry David, but the rest of the cast got paid a straight salary. Especially after the sale of the show to Hulu in 2015, David and Seinfeld raked in tens of millions each. That’s why Seinfeld is the richest comedian in the world, and the rest rank much lower.

Ray Romano

The show: “Everybody Loves Raymond”
How much he makes: $18 million per year
According to Yahoo!, Romao earns about $18 million a year in royalties from “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Romano even made the Forbes Celebrity 100 in 2013 thanks in part to this income stream.

Kelsey Grammer

The show: “Frasier”
How much he makes: $13 million per year
TheThings reports that Kelsey Grammer makes about $13 million every year on royalties from “Frasier,” which puts the show in esteemed company as a long-term earner for its stars. Overall, CelebrityNetWorth puts Grammer at about $80 million in total net worth, much of it from royalties but also a significant chunk in straight salary during the height of the show, when the star was earning about $38 million per season.

Edie Falco

The show: “The Sopranos”
How much she makes: $26 million per year
“The Sopranos” has had a wide influence on prestige television, and on the pocketbooks of its stars. Edie Falco walked away with a nice deal on reruns, earning her an estimated $26 million per year, according to Drivepedia.

Alan Alda

The show: “M*A*S*H”
How much he makes: $1 million per year
According to alot, Alda makes a nice little mill on residuals from the hit ‘70s wartime comedy series, “M*A*S*H.”

George Clooney

The show: “ER”
How much he makes: $13 million per year
It’s not like he needs it, but George Clooney reportedly earns about $13 million every year just from reruns of “ER,” on which he played Dr. Doug Ross.

Ed O’Neill

The show: “Married With Children”
How much he makes: $10 million per year
Before he was making big bucks on “Modern Family,” Ed O’Neill was leading another TV family on “Married With Children.” According to Drivepedia, O’Neill still earns a hefty $10 million on reruns of the classic show.

Ted Danson

Ted Danson

The show: “Cheers”
How much he makes: $5 million per year
On the same roundup, alot reports that Ted Danson makes about $5 million every year on royalties from his ‘80s comedy. Only Kelsey Grammer matches Danson for total net worth, while the rest of the co-stars rank below the duo.

Jim Parsons

The show: “The Big Bang Theory”
How much he makes: $10 million per year
Drivepedia also reports that Jim Parsons makes a substantial $10 million every year on royalties from “The Big Bang Theory,” helping lift the star to the top of the net worth rankings among the entire cast.

Lucile Ball

Lucille Ball

The show: “I Love Lucy”
How much she made: About $22 million (or $170 million in today’s money)
Stars probably wouldn’t be earning royalties at all if it weren’t for the ingenuity of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. At the outset of “I Love Lucy,” the stars had the foresight to take an immediate pay cut in order to retain control of the film negatives, allowing them to replay episodes later and inventing the concept of reruns. Over time, Ball sold off sections of these rights, ultimately hauling in $22 million over 10 years, amounting to $170 million today.
