Thanks to a stingy defensive performance South Carolina outlasted North Carolina 17-7 in the Shrine Bowl of The Carolinas. The 89th installment was held in Spartanburg and saw the Sandlappers of South Carolina allow just 136 total yards, while gaining 350 total yards.

Paul Sutherland who is retiring from coaching after being at the helm at Liberty High School, led South Carolina to the win. South Carolina got on the board on the 1st play of the game, when Dillon High star and UNC signee Zamarious Robertson had an 80 yard TD catch.

North Carolina tied it at 7 with a TD run from QB Brody Norman of Mooresville. Spartanburg High's Will Love hit a FG on his home field that made it 10-7. It stayed at that score until late in the 4th when Christ Church standout WR and Arkansas signee Jude "The Dude" Hall had a TD catch to make it 17-7.

On defense, Chester’s Terry Radford led South Carolina with 11 tackles. Both Dorman’s Kentavion Anderson and South Pointe’s J’Zavien Currence, each had interceptions for the Palmetto State All Stars.

With the win South Carolina leads the Shrine Bowl series with a record of 48-34-7. The win gives SC some retribution after a 49-24 loss last year. For Sutherland, it means going out with a win in his last high school game.
