Catch Full Interview On Yout

As we continue to shed light on 50 years of Hip Hop, it's important that we get the story of the art form from all sides. We sat down with our first DJ, not just any DJ, but the legendary DJ Jelly. DJ Jelly resides in Atlanta by way of St. Louis and found himself immersed in Atlanta's culture at an early age, never turning back.

DJ Jelly joined Xavier Brandon and DesiiTee of Voices in the Streets as we delved into his background and how he became the legendary DJ Jelly. Starting off in Magic City, an Atlanta staple, and contributing to the creation of the first big indie record label, Big Oomp Record label and Oomp Camp Productions, DJ Jelly has been a pivotal figure in Atlanta's hip-hop evolution. As we get into the conversation, it became evident that his impact extends far beyond Atlanta.

DJ Jelly gives us his take on how he reshaped the DJ game. He shared insights into his early days and how he, along with his fellow creatives at Oomp Camp Productions, redefined the role of a DJ by introducing a unique aspect to the art form, beyond simply spinning records. Oomp Camp introduced mixtapes and stores that were previously unheard of from a DJ's perspective. This innovation not only transformed the way people experienced music but also laid the foundation for a new era of DJ culture.
