2024 Kia EV6 GT Review: The OG Stays in the Game

When the Kia EV6 debuted in 2021, it was hailed as a modern marvel—a bold, futuristic design paired with impressive electric performance signaled Kia's serious entry into the EV arena. Fast forward to 2024, and while the EV6's design is starting to show its age, it's doing so gracefully. From my perspective, it's still a head-turner, but thank goodness for the performance and aesthetic upgrades in the GT trim, which might just keep it in the spotlight a little longer.

The matte gray finish on this model adds a stealthy, aggressive vibe, perfectly complemented by the 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 performance tires. Inside, the GT-exclusive bucket seats strike the right balance between sporty and comfortable, with neon green accents that pop against the dark interior. The metallic accent trim and the sleek, minimalist dashboard layout add to the cabin's futuristic charm. Even though the seats are nice looking and provide good lateral support, I'm surprised that an electric car would have manually operated seats—and power seats aren't even available in the GT trim.

But let's get to the heart of the matter: performance. The EV6 GT packs a dual-motor setup pushing out a staggering 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque, launching this crossover from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds—numbers that wouldn't embarrass a sports car. It's not just about speed, though. The electronic limited-slip differential and adaptive suspension make it a surprisingly agile machine for its size.

Of course, being an EV, the real question is: how does it stack up in the current electric landscape? The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, its distant, adrenaline-fueled cousin, may have recently stolen some of the EV6's thunder with its enhanced performance and track-ready dynamics. With more power, sharper handling, and aggressive N-brand tuning, the Ioniq 5 N pushes the envelope further than the EV6 GT in pure performance terms. But the EV6 GT fights back with a more refined balance between everyday drivability and exhilarating power, making it a more versatile option for those who want both speed and comfort.

Speaking of charging, the EV6 GT holds its own in the fast-charging department. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, it can go from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes on a DC fast charger. That's quicker than many competitors in its class. The range, however, takes a bit of a hit due to the performance focus, clocking in at 206 miles on a full charge—less than the standard EV6 models but still respectable for a high-performance EV.

In terms of comfort and convenience, Kia hasn't skimped. The EV6 GT comes with a 12.3-inch curved touchscreen, augmented reality head-up display, Meridian premium audio system, and an array of driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability is another neat trick, allowing you to power external devices—from camping equipment to laptops—directly from the car.

So, what's next for the EV6? With 2026 looming, one can't help but wonder: will Kia raise the ante again to keep this trailblazer in the running against an ever-growing field of competitors? If they can balance performance, range, and the evolving design language, there's no reason the EV6 can't continue to be a standout choice.

For now, the 2024 Kia EV6 GT remains a solid option in the high-performance EV segment. If EVs stick around for the long haul—and it sure looks like they will—this one's still a worthy contender.
