The 2025 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail may not shout luxury at first glance—but it doesn’t need to. It’s one of the most off-road capable luxury SUVs currently sold in North America, and it backs up that claim with serious engineering and real-world reliability.
I spent a whole week behind the wheel of the Overtrail, and it gave me something most six-figure SUVs rarely do: total confidence, regardless of terrain.
Refined, But Rugged
Around town, the LX 700h drives with the poise and quietness you expect from Lexus. Ride quality is exceptionally smooth for a body-on-frame vehicle. Steering is direct, and there’s a solid, planted feel that reassures rather than isolates.
Panel fitment—inside and out—is flawless. Lexus has always been known for its build quality, and this new generation LX carries that reputation forward.
That said, the cabin could use more visual richness. It’s handsome, functional, and clearly built for durability, but in Overtrail trim, the luxury experience is more subtle than sumptuous. With a price that can rival (or even exceed) that of the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GLS trims, some shoppers may expect more design drama.
But Lexus made that choice on purpose.
“This LX is the ultimate expression of the Lexus brand’s core values: reliability, durability, and comfort,” said Chief Engineer Takami Yokoo in my interview during the LX’s launch event in Napa Valley. “We know the customer expects performance in all conditions—on the road, off the road, in any climate—and we engineered it to deliver exactly that.”

Daily Use Surprises
I logged hours in Atlanta traffic, tackled errands, and put the LX 700h through daily family life. Two features stood out:
• The adjustable ride height made entry and exit easier for my wife and daughter. It lowers automatically when you park, which makes a big SUV feel user-friendly.
• The console-mounted cooler box kept our drinks cold throughout the weekend, even when the engine was off for short stints. It’s one of those Lexus details you didn’t know you needed until you have it.
The hybrid powertrain, featuring a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with electric assist, delivers 406 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s smooth, quiet, and strong, with plenty of grunt at low speeds. Whether you’re merging onto the highway or creeping over loose gravel, the LX responds without hesitation.
Built for the Backcountry
This is where the LX 700h Overtrail sets itself apart.
I took it to my local rock pit—an actual test of articulation, traction, and clearance—and it performed without breaking a sweat. The Multi-Terrain Select system, electronic locking rear differential, and E-KDSS suspension system work together to provide confidence-inspiring grip, even on uneven, unpredictable terrain.
The Overtrail trim includes:
• 18-inch matte gray wheels with 33-inch A/T tires
• Locking rear differential
• Multi-Terrain Select with six off-road modes
• Crawl Control and Downhill Assist
• Full underbody protection
• Blacked-out exterior trim and roof rails
It’s not just a Lexus in hiking boots—it’s a serious off-road machine wrapped in Lexus quiet and comfort.
Is It Luxurious Enough?
That depends on your definition of luxury.
If you associate luxury with bold design, chrome accents, and rear-seat champagne coolers, the Overtrail may feel too understated. But if you define luxury as capability, longevity, and craftsmanship, the LX 700h hits every mark.
More than any of its competitors, this SUV is engineered to last, not just to impress.
