A Worthy Family Adventure Companion

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Stakes its Claim as a Viable Choice for SUV Shoppers

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L proved to be a worthy companion for our recent 600-mile road trip from Atlanta to the Gulf Coast of Florida. Having experienced a wide array of SUVs and minivans over the years and having spent time in the 2022 Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve in California, we had high hopes for the Laredo 4x4.

The Grand Cherokee is available in eight trim levels ranging from the Laredo, with a starting MSRP of $44,130.00, all the way to the Summit Reserve, MSRP of $71,535.00. While we prefer the Summit Reserve with all of its luxury and technology, the Overland, MSRP $60,790, is the most likely choice for middle-class families.

As the base model for the Grand Cherokee, the Laredo lacked the "luxury" feel and advanced technologies of the Summit, not to mention the hefty price tag. Still, everything else was familiar and well done. During our previous excursions in the top-of-the-line Summit, we really appreciated the innovative seating configuration of the Grand Cherokee L. The second-row captain's chairs significantly enhanced passenger comfort, evoking a sense of luxury for our family of three. However, when we included three of our closest friends for this road trip, interior space and cargo capacity proved to be a bit of a challenge. Unlike many of its three-row competitors, the third row of the Grand Cherokee L accommodates just two passengers, making it officially a six-passenger vehicle. While there is decent legroom and a nice bonus of individual climate zones in the cabin to compensate for the limited seating, any family looking for a seven-passenger Grand Cherokee will have to sacrifice the luxury of the captain's chairs and instead go with the optional second-row bench seat.

While we're complaining, let's get right to cargo capacity, which is paramount for any SUV, especially for a six or seven-passenger SUV. The space behind the third row was limited, so we were forced to exercise our "IKEA" muscles to accommodate our luggage. Let's just say we added a couple of extra armrests and footrests for the journey. While this exercise of fitting a square peg into a round hole was challenging we managed to make it all work. During our four-hour ride, it was evident that the vast majority of full-size SUV owners on the road faced the same challenge of cargo space. It's no wonder aftermarket companies sell so many roof-top cargo carriers and trailer hitch accessories. Word to the wise, if you have a large family and plan road trips, be sure to opt for the tow package (trailer hitch) and roof racks cross bars.

On a higher note, the Grand Cherokee's commendable fuel tank capacity enhanced the road-trip experience by minimizing visits to gas stations. It allowed for extended periods of enjoyment along scenic routes while cutting down on travel time. Even with the substantial fuel tank, a brief 30-minute stop at the renowned Buc-ee's was easily accommodated; my traveling companions wouldn't dare miss those brisket sandwiches and fudge.

Let's face it, road trips are few and far between, but Jeep's renowned commitment to off-road capability remains evident in the Grand Cherokee L's performance. The vehicle can navigate diverse terrains, equipped with various 4x4 systems, such as the Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II, with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. Impressive ground clearance and water-fording depth further solidified a sense of security for anyone venturing off traditional pathways.

The Grand Cherokee L offers more than just off-road prowess; it also boasts notable on-road dynamics. Integrating a new unibody vehicle architecture, independent suspensions, and the Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active damping resulted in a smooth and comfortable ride on both highways and city streets. And with six passengers and our luggage, the Grand Cherokee felt unbothered.

Technological features within the Grand Cherokee L are on par with the industry. The Uconnect 5 system, complete with a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen and wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, facilitated seamless connectivity and entertainment throughout the journey. The optional 19-speaker McIntosh audio system transformed the in-cabin atmosphere into a symphony of sound, elevating the overall road-trip experience in the Summit, so the base system did leave a little to be desired in that category.

Safety considerations are paramount, and the Grand Cherokee L impressively delivers advanced driver-assist systems, surround view and night vision cameras (on the Summit), and an array of next-generation technologies. These features instill an additional layer of confidence during travels, enhancing occupants' overall peace of mind.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L left a lasting impression by meeting our expectations and delivering an unforgettable road-trip experience. Its unique blend of comfort, capability, and advanced technology makes it a formidable competitor in the crowded SUV field. Whether navigating off-road trails or cruising along highways, the Grand Cherokee L emerges as a commendable companion. This sentiment underscores its prominent role in the lineage of celebrated SUVs, solidifying its place as a noteworthy contender in the market.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L pricing starts at $42,130.00 for the 4x2 and $44,130.00 for the 4x4. Our tester came equipped with an Optional preferred package ($5,105), Trailer Tow Prep Group ($695) and Power Sunroof ($1,440) for a MSRP of $54,070.00 (including $1,795 destination charge).
