A New Era of Innovation: The 2024 Kia EV9 Review

When Kia introduced the 2024 EV9 to the U.S. market, I had reservations. The idea of an all-electric, three-row SUV seemed ambitious, perhaps even unnecessary. After all, did we really need an EV designed to cater to families, with space and utility reminiscent of traditional gas-powered SUVs? However, after a week-long test drive—including several joyrides with my 86-year-old father—my hesitations have been thoroughly debunked. My father, who is usually reserved about modern technology, couldn't stop praising the EV9's innovation and style. He marveled at its features and repeatedly asked, "What more could anyone need from a vehicle?" Coming from someone with decades of automobile experience, that sentiment speaks volumes.

First Impressions: Design Meets Purpose
The EV9's exterior design boldly declares Kia's "Opposites United" philosophy, combining rugged practicality with futuristic aesthetics. It's distinctive, no doubt, but perhaps too cutting-edge for some. The sharp angles and futuristic grille may polarize opinions. Personally, I'd like to see Kia smooth out some of the edges and incorporate a touch more luxury in the exterior detailing to align with the premium experience inside.

At 197.4 inches long, it's slightly larger than the Telluride, offering up to 81.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded. Yet, despite its size, the EV9 doesn't feel unwieldy. The short overhangs and long wheelbase make it agile and manageable, even in tighter urban spaces.

Inside the Cabin: A Sanctuary for All
The EV9's interior is nothing short of groundbreaking. The cabin is airy, modern, and infused with eco-conscious materials like partially recycled fabrics and BTX-free trim. While I appreciate Kia's commitment to sustainability, I would have preferred more premium materials in some areas to rival the feel of ultra-luxury SUVs.

The dual-display cockpit with hidden haptic controls is intuitive, and the Relaxation Mode second-row seats—complete with heating, cooling, and leg extensions—might make you forget you're in a family SUV. My father, a fan of traditional luxury, was thoroughly impressed by the Meridian® Premium Audio system and the head-up display, which elevated the driving experience to something truly first-class.

Performance: Power and Versatility
The EV9 offers a variety of powertrain options, but the GT-Line's dual-motor AWD configuration is the standout, delivering 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It's fast—0-60 mph in around 5 seconds—but also versatile, with 7.8 inches of ground clearance and 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.

Despite its performance credentials, the EV9 is equally adept at everyday tasks. Whether navigating city streets or embarking on a weekend getaway, it delivers a smooth, composed ride that instills confidence. Plus, the 800V architecture allows ultrafast charging, replenishing from 10% to 80% in under 25 minutes on a DC fast charger.

Technology: A Glimpse Into the Future
The EV9 is a tech lover's dream, boasting features like over-the-air updates, Kia's Digital Key, and Remote Smart Parking Assist 2, which allows you to park the car from outside the vehicle. Advanced driver-assistance systems, including Highway Driving Assist 2 and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, provide peace of mind, making long drives less fatiguing.

The Verdict
Every hesitation I had about the EV9 was wrong. It's more than just a three-row EV—it's a statement of what the future holds for family transportation. With accolades such as World Car of the Year, North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, and Edmunds' Top-Rated Electric SUV, the EV9 is setting benchmarks across the industry.

While I'd love to see more luxurious exterior touches and premium materials in some areas of the cabin, there's no denying the EV9 is a tour de force. Kia has redefined the electric SUV segment with a vehicle that appeals to everyone—whether you're an 86-year-old enthusiast or a skeptical automotive journalist.

The EV9 isn't just a great EV; it's one of the most compelling SUVs on the market today. Kia's future is electric, and with the EV9, the road ahead looks incredibly promising.
